Aluminized garments protect against extreme radiant heat (up to 95% reflection) and molten metal splashes by acting as a specialized outer shell, not for daily wear. They must be worn over flame-resistant (FR) protective clothing, never directly on the skin, and are used primarily for short-term, high-risk tasks like pouring metal.

Key Usage Guidelines:

  • Layering: Wear flame-resistant underwear and clothing underneath to handle heat transfer that passes through the outer layer.
  • Inspection: Check for damage, rips, or contamination (e.g., grease, dirt) before every use, as these can severely diminish reflective capabilities.
  • Application: Utilize appropriate pieces (jackets, aprons, gaiters, hoods, gloves) based on the specific hazards of the task, ensuring they are worn during peak exposure and removed afterward to reduce heat stress.
  • Maintenance: Store in a clean, dry, and ventilated area. Clean according to manufacturer instructions, as abrasive cleaning can remove the aluminized coating.
  • Limitations: While resistant to heat, they are not intended for long-term use and should be replaced if they show signs of serious damage.

Safety Considerations:

  • Not a Direct Contact Barrier: Generally, they are for radiation and splash protection, not touching surfaces hotter than unless specified.
  • Avoid Moisture: Moisture on the suit can cause the aluminized layer to peel.
  • Replacement: Replace the garment every 3 years or earlier if damaged.
